ashtanga yoga teacher training india

The fIfth, sixth and seventh limbs of yoga (see pages 18—19) are sense withdrawal, concentration and meditation. Astanga yoga encompasses all these elements within the practice. Sense withdrawal is understood as a process of turning the normally outward focus of the senses inward so that you listen to the sound of your breath, use your eyes to focus on the gazing points (drishti; see page 39) and feel the movement of your body. Sense withdrawal induces a state of concentration in which all your faculties are turned to the object of focus — the series you are moving through. Meditation occurs spontaneously from concentration as your focus deepens. You are able to become totally absorbed by it, to the point where you no longer differentiate yourself from the object of your focus which is samadhi, the eighth limb: the super conscious state. There are varying degrees of the meditative state — you may frequently slip into a mild form of this kind of meditation when walking. En fact, a well known cure for unsolved problems is a “turn around the block”. Repetitive movements can free the mind and make space for it to expand limitlessly.
